NIPSCO calls for an adjustment of natural gas tariffs to improve the safety and reliability of its natural gas network

NIPSCO on Wednesday submitted a request to the Indiana Utilities Regulatory Commission (IURC) to adjust its base rates for natural gas. NIPSCO sys the proposed increase will be subject to an extensive regulatory review process, including the opportunity for the public to participate. If approved by the IURC, it is expected that the new gas tariffs will be phased in in two stages. The first phase would come into force on September 1, 2022 at the earliest.

“Maintaining a safe system and ensuring the safety of our customers and communities is ingrained in all facets of the work we do now and this will continue to determine how we operate in the future,” said Mike Hooper, President and COO of NIPSCO. “This demand will allow essential resources and investments to maintain the integrity of our infrastructure while balancing costs and improvements to better serve our customers.” “

NIPSCO’s natural gas base tariffs were last approved in 2018. Since then, NIPSCO says it has invested approximately $ 885 million in system upgrades, technology enhancements, and safety and reliability initiatives. pipelines to be completed until the end of 2022, with plans for the future, continued investment. The company says it has been Indiana’s lowest natural gas supplier on average over the past 10 years according to IURC comparisons (Source: Indiana Utility’s 2021 Residential Bill Survey Regulatory Commission) and among the lowest in the country.

NIPSCO’s goals are to ensure that its 850,000 industrial, commercial and residential customers in the 32 counties it serves receive a safe and reliable supply of natural gas, and that the company remains compliant with federal safety requirements and states.

As a regulated energy supplier, NIPSCO cannot change any tariffs or charges for its customers without the approval of the IURC.

According to NIPSCO’s proposal, a residential customer using 70 thermal baths per month, paying about $ 55 today, would see an overall increase of about $ 9 per month, or 17%. This estimated change includes a proposed increase in the monthly subscriber fee from $ 14 to $ 24.50.

This proposed increase in the customer rate will result in greater stability of the bill, which benefits customers by reducing the fluctuation of the bill between periods of high consumption and low consumption, in particular the heating months in winter.

It is proposed that the new tariffs be phased in in two stages. Phase one tariffs would not go into effect until September 1, 2022. The benefits of increased user fees would include lower volatility in monthly customer bills, lower winter bills for high demand customers. use and a more efficient way to recover fixed costs. The actual projected impacts on the bill may vary from customer to customer, depending on usage and potential future changes in natural gas market prices. The total overall increase requested would be approximately $ 115 million per year.
