AND AFTER: The sixth-seeded Boise State women’s football team (11-6-4 / 4-4-3 MW) prepares to play their second straight Mountain West Championship final as host New -Mexico (13-4-2 / ââ7-2-2 MW) Saturday at noon at the Boas Soccer Complex.
LAST TIME : The Broncos advanced to the title game after passing second-seeded Fresno State in a 6-5 shootout. After allowing the first goal in the 17th minute, the fifth-year senior Aubree Chatterton equalized the score 1-1 where he remained during settlement and the two overtime periods.
After the first five penalty attempts by both teams, the goalkeeper Sydney smith made a save on the Bulldogs’ sixth down. True freshness Michaela justiniani stepped up instead for the Broncos and sank the clincher, advancing Boise State to its second straight MW Championship final.
WHAT TO MONITOR: With Thursday’s result, Boise State became the first No.6 seed to qualify for the MW Championship title game. He also continued the Broncos’ home unbeaten streak to six games as they are 4-0-2 in that span when playing for Boas.
Boise State’s defense has grown significantly in its last five games, allowing an average of just 0.80 goals per game with a shutout during that span. Good form will be put to the test as the defense tries to contain MW Offensive Player of the Year Jadyn Edwards and an offense who has scored 2.00 goals per game this season. The last meeting between the two teams was only a one-goal affair, as Boise State limited New Mexico to one goal but failed to score one of their own.
Saturday’s game is a real David v Goliath affair. New Mexico have won playoff honors this season, earning 10 Mountain West accolades, including Coach of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and four caps in the first team of all conferences. Boise State won just three of those honors, with two second-team caps and a new squad member. If the Broncos are victorious in the final, they will be the first team to be crowned Mountain West Champions without any first team player from all of the conferences on the roster.
LOBO SCOUTING: New Mexico was picked to finish first in this year’s MW preseason coaching poll, and after defeating Utah State 2-1 in double overtime in the MW Championship semifinals, the Lobos headed series, end up exactly where everyone expected them to be: in the match for the MW Championship title.
Leading the conference in goals against (10) and second in goals scored (18), it can be hard to find weakness in the New Mexico team that finished 7-2-2 in the league.
The Lobos are led by MW Offensive Player of the Year Jadyn Edwards, who finished the conference game with five goals and five assists while leading the league in shots taken (44). They also have six other players who have won nods of all conferences, in addition to Heather Dyche, back-to-back MW Coach of the Year.
New Mexico won their first meeting with Boise State this season, winning 1-0 at home in a clash in early October. The last meeting between the two MW Championship programs was in 2019 when Boise State won 6-0 en route to their first MW Championship title.
