This is precisely what has happened in this unpretentious area, where a two-story home has been transformed into a stunning cavern-like structure, thanks to the innovative efforts of the Japanese art collective known as 目, pronounced "mé," which translates to "eye."
Composed of talented individuals including artist Haruka Kojin, director Kenji Minamigawa, and installer Hirofumi Masui, this group focuses on creating art that inspires fresh perspectives on our ever-evolving world. Their works have included mesmerizing pieces that capture the essence of ocean waves seemingly frozen in time and whimsical giant balloons featuring people's faces that float above bustling urban landscapes.
Their latest work, titled "Space II," is situated in a residential area famous for its onsen, or natural hot springs, drawing in visitors from near and far. This installation embraces the unique geological and geothermal qualities of the region, presenting an ethereal cave-like environment complete with metal steps and railings reminiscent of popular tourist attractions. The exterior showcases large openings that give the illusion of a rock formation sculpted into the shape of a house, rather than a standard building turned into a cavern.
This project is a sequel to a previous endeavor called "Space," crafted back in 2020, where 目 designed a sleek, narrow exhibition space on the second floor of an otherwise ordinary house in Aomori.
