Texas Longhorns OL Nick Brooks Transfers: What Happened? (2026)

A major shakeup is happening for the Texas Longhorns: Offensive lineman Nick Brooks is entering the NCAA transfer portal. This move could significantly impact the team's future, especially as they scout for talent to bolster their offensive line.

Brooks, a massive presence at 6'7" and 349 pounds, still has three seasons of eligibility remaining, offering a lot of potential for any team that snags him. He played in five games for the Longhorns in 2025.

His journey to Texas was a winding one. Initially committed to Iowa, Brooks bounced between Iowa and Georgia during high school, eventually finishing his prep career at Grayson in Loganville, a powerhouse program. During his recruitment, he also considered Iowa, Texas, Georgia, and USC. Texas, under position coach Kyle Flood, ultimately won the battle for Brooks, a significant victory considering Flood's challenges in securing top-tier offensive linemen since the 2022 recruiting class. Brooks was a highly-regarded prospect, finishing the 2025 cycle as a four-star recruit, ranked No. 239 nationally and No. 25 offensive tackle, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

But here's where it gets controversial... Brooks' time at Texas had its share of turbulence. After enrolling early, he generated positive buzz during the spring. However, a summer DWI arrest, where he reportedly told police he was taking recruits on unofficial visits to a strip club, cast a shadow. When Texas struggled to find a starting left guard, Brooks was thrust into action as a true freshman, despite primarily playing tackle in the past. It didn't go smoothly. He gave up a sack and seven quarterback hurries in a game against Florida. Against Kentucky, he allowed three sacks and two more quarterback hurries.

Consequently, Coach Flood benched Brooks when Cole Hutson returned from injury, and Connor Robertson took over at center. Brooks didn't see the field again after playing 30 snaps in a win against Mississippi State.

Despite the challenges, Brooks' potential remained high, especially as a potential starter at tackle after Trevor Goosby leaves for the 2027 NFL Draft. This makes his departure a significant loss for Coach Flood.

What do you think about Brooks' decision? Do you believe his struggles were due to his off-field issues, or was he simply not a good fit for the team? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
