Gardaí have relaunched their appeal for information about a Mayo woman who disappeared a quarter of a century ago today. It is believed Sandra Collins was abducted and killed, though the location of her body remains unknown after a lengthy investigation.

The 28-year-old was last seen around 11pm on 4 December 2000, leaving a takeaway in Killala. In the days following her disappearance, a fleece jacket worn by Sandra was discovered at a local pier, but her remains were never recovered.

Although many years have passed, detectives insist there are people who hold information that could be crucial to the case and are asking for any details that might help investigators make a breakthrough.

Her brother Patrick described the anniversary as an emotionally charged day. He reflected on what is going through his mind, especially questions about whether she is alive and what she might be doing now.

Mr. Collins expressed with certainty that some people still possess information that could lead to locating his sister’s remains, urging those individuals to come forward. He spoke of a persistent sense of powerlessness and a longing for the day when the family can lay Sandra to rest next to their parents, who died after she disappeared.

“The person who killed her must have spoken to someone at some point over the last twenty-five years. I’m asking anyone with information to speak out now,” he said.

He added: “This is a legacy we hope not to pass on to the next generation.”

Since 2006, the Collins family has honored Sandra by decorating their home for Christmas on the anniversary of her disappearance, a tradition that continues each year. Tonight, friends and neighbours are joining the family to commemorate the 25-year milestone since Sandra was last seen alive.

Detectives are particularly eager to hear from anyone who may have information now, possibly from people who felt constrained at the time but are willing to speak out today. All contacts will be treated with confidentiality, compassion, and sensitivity.
