Porsche Carrera Cup Australia: Race Cancelled After Multiple Crashes at Turn 8 (2025)

Imagine this: a high-stakes Porsche race, the roar of engines, the spray of rain... and then, utter chaos. A race in Adelaide was abruptly called off after a shocking series of crashes – four in a single lap at the notorious Turn 8. But here’s where it gets controversial: was it just bad luck, or were there deeper issues at play?

The drama unfolded as rain slicked the track, turning the already challenging Turn 8 into a treacherous trap. Lochie Bloxsom was the first victim, but he wouldn't be the last.

What followed was almost unbelievable. Bayley Hall lost control and slammed into the wall. Then, in quick succession, Carrera Cup Germany champion and Supercup runner-up Robert de Haan of the Netherlands, along with New Zealander Marco Giltrap, also found themselves victims of the same corner, piling into the barrier. It was a domino effect of disaster.

The force of these impacts was so severe that the concrete blocks lining the track were dislodged. Officials had no choice but to wave the red flag, immediately halting the race. Shortly thereafter, the inevitable decision was made: the race was declared finished and would not be restarted.

Bayley Hall, understandably shaken, described the terrifying experience. “It was weird,” he explained. “I came into Turn 8 and hit the brakes and obviously had no ABS, so the front brakes just instantly locked and pumped the pedal to turn the wheel. I just got to a point where you know you’re going in. It’s the worst feeling in the world and you just take your hands off the wheel.” He added, “It’s just weird how three cars all went in right next to each other.”

Despite the setback, Hall remained optimistic. “Nothing we can do now. Just fight on tomorrow, starting on the front row. The EMA Motorsport guys will fix up the car and we’ll get back out there. I did half a decent job to square it up on the wall, so I think it’s a lot more front end damage than it is in the rear, which is the bad part to fix. I think we’ll be all right for tomorrow.”

The tricky conditions had already played a significant role even before the Turn 8 carnage. As rain began to fall, teams and drivers faced a critical strategic choice: gamble on slick tires or pit for wets. Several drivers dove into the pit lane for wet-weather tires as the rest remained on slicks, hoping the rain would subside.

De Haan, who started on pole position, was quickly overtaken by Max Vidau. Vidau, starting from 12th, had made the bold decision to start on wet tires, a gamble that paid off handsomely as he surged to the lead.

Behind the leaders, Dean Cook spun out at the Seanna Chicane, and so too did Am class leader Rodney Jane. Cook’s car was too badly damaged to continue, forcing him to retire without completing a single lap. Jane, however, managed to continue, eventually finishing in 17th place.

The international drivers who had started on slicks pitted at the end of the first lap to switch to wets. Angelo Mouzouris held second place until he pitted after the second lap for his wets, ultimately finishing 11th.

Following the pit stops, the running order settled with David Russell in second place, followed by Clay Osborne, Dale Wood, and championship leader Dylan O’Keeffe. Aaron Love, Harri Jones, Marcos Flack, Carrera Cup debutant Jake Santalucia, and Hamish Fitzsimmons rounded out the top eleven. And this is the part most people miss... this was the order when the red flags were waved, a snapshot frozen in time by the downpour.

The persistent and heavy rain also caused delays to the second qualifying session for the Dunlop Super2 Series, highlighting the severity of the weather conditions.

Race 2 for the Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia is scheduled for 1:20pm ACDT on Saturday. Will the weather cooperate, or will we see more drama? Considering the conditions, some might argue the race should have been delayed from the start. What are your thoughts? Was it simply a case of drivers pushing too hard in difficult conditions, or was there something inherently dangerous about running the race at that time? Let us know in the comments!
