Legendary Entertainment, the powerhouse behind blockbuster hits like 'Dune' and the 'Godzilla' franchise, has just made a major move in its IP strategy. In a strategic partnership with Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS), Legendary is expanding its reach into the Japanese market and beyond. This collaboration is set to unlock a treasure trove of Japanese intellectual property (IP) for Legendary, offering a unique opportunity to tap into a rich cultural wellspring.
The deal involves TBS acquiring a substantial $150 million minority stake in Legendary, led by CEO Josh Grode and Chief Creative Officer Mary Parent. This investment not only provides Legendary with access to Japanese IP but also strengthens its position in the global entertainment landscape. Legendary's leadership and Apollo Funds retain majority ownership, ensuring a collaborative yet mutually beneficial relationship.
"TBS has been a cornerstone of the Japanese creative industry for decades, working closely with publishers, animators, writers, and artists. Their deep understanding of the local market presents exciting opportunities for collaboration," said Grode. "We're thrilled to partner with TBS to broaden our relationships in Japan and help expand the global reach of its rich IP, while respecting and honoring the talented creators who have made it all possible."
The partnership is non-exclusive, allowing Legendary to explore various content verticals. TBS's portfolio includes The Seven, a production shop with offices in Japan and the US, known for series like Netflix's 'Alice in Borderland' and 'Yu Yu Hakusho.' Legendary's upcoming projects, such as 'Godzilla x Kong: Supernova,' 'Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,' 'Street Fighter,' and 'Pokémon: Detective Pikachu,' are all steeped in Japanese IP, making this partnership a perfect match.
Yayoi Nakatani, Board Director and Chief Growth Officer of TBS Holdings, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration: "We are thrilled to partner with Legendary, a world-class studio renowned for its global hits. Legendary's creativity and ability to build and expand IPs into worldwide franchises will be a driving force for our global strategy."
This strategic move by Legendary not only strengthens its IP portfolio but also opens up new avenues for creative collaboration, potentially leading to groundbreaking content that will captivate audiences worldwide.
