The WA Health alert, issued on Thursday, identified five public places where individuals may have been exposed to the virus. These sites include the South Street Pharmacy in Murdoch on January 19th, between 8:40 am and 9:15 am, Woolworths Coolbellup on January 16th, between 7:05 pm and 7:40 pm, Bunnings O'Connor on the same day, between 7:10 am and 7:50 am, Melville Toyota on January 15th, between 7:50 am and 8:30 am, and again from 4:15 pm to 4:45 pm, and Wembley Golf Club on January 14th, between 11:15 am and 11:50 am.
This case is particularly concerning as it marks the first measles infection in the state this year, a stark contrast to the 63 cases recorded in 2025. The virus's highly contagious nature, which spreads through airborne droplets lingering in the air for up to 30 minutes, makes it a formidable opponent. Symptoms typically appear around 10 days after exposure, but this range can extend from seven to 18 days.
The initial symptoms are not to be missed: fever, fatigue, a runny nose, red eyes, and a cough. These early signs are followed by a distinctive red rash a few days later. Health authorities are urging Australians to stay vigilant and ensure their vaccinations are up to date, especially before traveling overseas.
