Claim Your Share! NSW Residents Could Be Owed Money - Here's How to Check (2026)

Are you owed a share of $300 million in unclaimed money? New South Wales residents are being urged to check if they are eligible for a piece of the pie.

It's not just a game of chance, but a matter of staying informed and proactive. The government is trying to reunite these funds with their rightful owners, and you could be next.

But here's where it gets interesting: The pool of unclaimed money includes overpayments, uncashed cheques, dividends, refunds, and other amounts owed to individuals the government hasn't been able to contact. This could be due to forgotten details, lost paperwork, or unaware estates.

Sydney's city and eastern suburbs have the highest amount of unclaimed money, with over $91 million waiting to be claimed. But it's not just the big city folks who are eligible.

Western Sydney comes in second with about $77 million, while the Central Coast and Hunter regions have $22 million unclaimed. And if you've conducted business in NSW but live outside the state, you may also be eligible for the almost $395 million in additional money for people registered at interstate addresses.

The government procurement minister, Courtney Houssos, said, "We want to make sure as much of that as possible finds its way back to families."

And this is the part most people miss...

Houssos also announced legislative changes aimed at streamlining the system. The time businesses can hold onto the money will be reduced from six years to two, making it easier for people to access their funds.

If you're wondering if you're a recipient, search your name on the Revenue NSW unclaimed money portal and lodge a claim.

But be prepared for a wait. Claims can take up to 28 days to verify that a person is legally entitled to the money. So, don't hold your breath, but do stay informed.

Now it's your turn. Are you eligible for a share of this unclaimed money? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
