Prepare to be captivated by a fashion legend’s legacy as SCAD Lacoste brings André Leon Talley’s iconic style to the heart of France, but here’s where it gets even more intriguing: this isn’t just a rehash of his previous exhibitions—it’s a deeply personal homage to his profound connection with French culture and haute couture. Nestled in the picturesque Provence region, SCAD Lacoste—the French outpost of the Savannah College of Art and Design—is set to unveil André Leon Talley: Style Is Forever in its museum space, offering a fresh perspective on the late fashion luminary’s life and work.
Building on the success of its Atlanta and Savannah chapters, this exhibition delves into Talley’s generous bequest to SCAD’s permanent collections: a treasure trove of personal garments, accessories, photographs, and documents that paint a vivid portrait of his extraordinary career. Curated by Rafael Brauer Gomes, creative director of SCADFash museums, the show opens on April 1 and runs through October 31, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in Talley’s world.
But this is the part most people miss: while Talley’s global influence is undeniable, his ties to France were uniquely profound. As Ariel Stark, SCAD Fashion Lacoste manager, explains, “This French chapter celebrates not just his legacy, but his deep-rooted love for France and its fashion heritage.” Talley’s academic background in French literature—an undergraduate degree from Carolina Central University and a master’s from Brown University—laid the groundwork for his encyclopedic knowledge of French culture, which became a cornerstone of his fashion journalism.
Talley’s relationship with France was both personal and professional. He first visited the country as a student in 1971 and later lived in Paris during two pivotal periods: 1978–1980 while working for Women’s Wear Daily, and again from 1989 to 1995. In 2021, he was honored with France’s highest cultural distinction, the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, a testament to his enduring impact on the arts.
Now, in Lacoste, the exhibition takes a bold new direction with 23 looks that spotlight French fashion houses and designers. From Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel creations to Nicolas Ghesquière’s Balenciaga masterpieces, and pieces from John Galliano’s Dior era, Yves Saint Laurent, Hermès, and Roger Vivier, these silhouettes are presented on custom mannequins cast from a sculpture of Talley by SCAD alum Stephen Hayes.
And here’s where it gets controversial: while Talley’s own style is the star, the exhibition also features eight evening gowns worn by his famous friends, including Renee Zellweger, Anne Hathaway, Anna Wintour, and Lauren Santo Domingo.
