Search Engines

Observatory"Search engines" allow you to search the World Wide Web for a particular item or area of interest. Some of the most popular are listed below.

It takes some practice to search the World Wide Web for what you are looking for. For example, if you wanted to find out about sailing, you might enter the word "sailing" in the keyword box and click the "search" button. The search engine would then display a list of links to other web sites that have something to do with the keyword you entered. You might end up with thousands of matches.

To narrow the search, enter several words, such as "ocean sailing".

Popular Search Engines:

Google - http://www.google.com/ - Quick, up-to-date results.

Yahoo - http://www.yahoo.com/ - Site is organized into categories. You can search the entire site, or just the current category.

Alta Vista - http://www.altavista.com/ - Can search in several languages. Also "natural language" searches.

Excite - http://www.excite.com/ - Searches a large area of the web.

HotBot - http://www.hotbot.com/ - Good at searching for items based on the date web pages were updated.

Infoseek - http://www.infoseek.com/ or http://infoseek.go.com/

Lycos - http://www.lycos.com/ -

Webcrawler - http://www.webcrawler.com/ -

 'Meta'-Search Engines

These search engines actually will use several search engines at once to find web sites. Here are some that I've come across:

Dogpile - http://www.dogpile.com/ - In my opinion, the best meta-search engine around. It will search Google, Alta Vista, Lycos, and several others all at once!

Ask Jeeves - http://www.ask.com/ - Ask a question (i.e. "natural language query") instead of using keywords.

GoTo.com - http://www.goto.com/ - Searches for commercial sites.

Infozoid - http://www.infozoid.com/ -

Metafind - http://www.metafind.com/ -

The Microsoft Network - http://www.msn.com/ - Access to several search engines.
